Przedecz remembers Katyń
200712:00
Residents of Przedecz honored the memory of Polish officers murdered in the USSR in 1940. Citizens prepared a frame for a large-format poster of a child's letter to their father. A letter just like many others found in mass graves in Katyń.
Posters displaying a reconstructed letter were part of the National Center for Culture's educational campaign and were put up in the main cities of Poland in the end of August and the beginning of September. “We really wanted the 'Katyń Letter' to go up in our town as well” says Grzegorz Rybiński of the Przedecz Regional Government Association. “Piotr Górecki came up with the idea of making a billboard that could be used for other educational campaigns in the future”, adds Rybiński. The poster has been on display in Przedecz since September 22nd. The Association also held a memorial for the 60th anniversary of the Katyń Genocide. A mass was held at the symbolic grave of Leon Kulesza, a Polish Army officer from Przedecz whose body rests in Katyń. Mrs. Bożena Żołobińska, Mr. Ryszard Marciniak and Mr. Roman Kopczyński financially supported the procurement of necessary construction materials, the making of the frame and the installation of the poster. “We're grateful for their help, and we hope the National Center for Culture will remember our town on future anniversaries and will send us occasional posters” says Grzegorz Rybiński.
