NCK Director
Director of the National Center for Culture in Poland
One of the responsibilities of the National Center for Culture in Poland is to foster the civic and historical consciousness of Poles. The “Remember Katyń 1940” educational campaign is a practical example of our mission. The elite of the nation — thousands of officers murdered in 1940 for their loyalty to Poland — deserve our memory. The National Center for Culture strives to restore these heroes, heroes without which there would be no independent Poland.
Our goal is to not only convey the truth about this moment in history, but also to encourage reflection on the modern form of patriotism. Civic patriotism, open towards the future, built upon the witnesses of the past.
The symbol of out campaign is the replica of a Polish Army officer's coat button, found in the Katyń forest. Inspired by the words of Zbigniew Herbert's poem, “Buttons”, we believe that it will be a sign of memory and identification with the heroes of Katyń.
The initiative undertaken by the National Center for Culture goes beyond the media landscape. Apart from the billboard campaign, television and radio campaign, we support and realize projects in cooperation with local partners.
